Teen Book Talks
These book talk posters, that I made using Canva, were a major assignment/project in my Teen Popular Literature class. I used these posters to discuss very specific subgenres that exist in teen literature, and to spark interest in these different types of books. Next to each poster, you will find a detailed description of the subgenre, as well as a guide to the different symbols utilized within the posters.
Secret Societies & Elite Groups
These books, selected especially for teens and young adults, focus on secret societies and elite groups. Secret societies are a cultural phenomenon, so obviously books will tell stories of these societies as well. Elite groups are organizations, clubs, or groups of individuals who excel in a specific way, that set them apart from the majority of people. These stories, and their read-alikes, tell stories of characters navigating membership within these organizations and overcoming the challenges that come with being unique.
Next to each cover photo, you can find a description of each book. These descriptions are taken directly from the Goodreads site, and do not represent my own words.
The different symbols next to each cover photo relate to the subject matter contained within each of the stories.
The wand symbol represents magic.
The DNA symbol represents the membership in the secret society or elite group being a result of something the characters are born with, rather than being something the character earns.
The knife symbol represents violence, or graphic fighting sequences.
The heart symbol represents romance or love being a major plot line throughout the story.
The tv symbol represents a TV show or movie being made about the book or series.
The brain symbol represents that the content within the story is highly intellectual, and may not be a good option for casual or younger readers.
Competitive Survival
Competitive Survival is a very specific subgenre in literature, but is also extremely popular! These types of books are very frequently turned into movie and tv series. The books mentioned in the “read-alike” section of the poster, like The Hunger Games, the Divergent series, and the Maze Runner series, are each a pop-culture phenomenon! I wanted to feature some lesser known stories in the main section of this poster, so please enjoy learning about some of these other stories.
